Fresh Snow

Winter maintenance is a public service, and as such uses public dollars to get the job done. That is simply to say that we have to be accountable for the dollars spent, and sometimes the media can get a little antsy about the spending. The story here, from Denver, is an interesting one. At the end of January this year, CDOT (which is responsible for the whole state, not just Denver) had spent 60% of their winter maintenance budget. Given there was a lot of snow early, this is not too surprising. What is surprising is why anyone would think that Denver’s winter experience is typical of the whole state. I must admit, I find it all a bit puzzling, but sadly, not too surprising! https://denver.cbslocal.com/2020/01/27/snow-removal-budget-colorado-department-transportation-cdot/

Many states provide extremely useful traveler information on the impacts of winter storms on their 511 sites. This story details how Wyoming does this. http://www.dot.state.wy.us/news/motorists-rely-heavily-on-wydots-511-system-during-recent-storms
